The Race

This 20 to 25 gate course will be an intermediate difficulty open boat course on class 1+ water. Intermediate decked boaters (C, D), novices and beginners are encouraged to race as well.

The race is designed to encourage new open boaters to race, as well as provide a challenge to experienced open boat racers, and to give intermediate decked boat racers a chance to improve their skills.

Awards will be presented to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each of the offered classes.

Slalom Race Registration

Pre-registration deadline is August 3 Late registration will be accepted until Saturday, August 12 at 1:00 PM.

As an added bonus, we will be giving away T-shirts to the first 50 pre-registered racers, so pre-registration is encouraged.

Pre-registration for Slalom Race (before Aug. 4):
$16 for the first class
$10 for the second class
free third class
Late registration for Slalom Race (after Aug. 4):
$22 for the first class
$10 for the second class
free third class
Registration for Freestyle Contest (any time):
$20 per paddler (includes t-shirt for the first 12 contestants or all contestants registered by 8/3/06 - sign up early!)

Freestyle Contest - August 12

The contest will begin on Saturday at 5 pm. The flat water, freestyle contest will test a paddler's skill in a rodeo kayak. A $20 entry fee will include a T-shirt (the first 12 contestants or all contestants that are registered by 8/3/06), a chance to win the grand prize of $100 and a prize drawing. Freestyle criteria will be posted at Sunnyside and will be available at TMO before race weekend so you can practice. You can registered for the Freestyle Contest anytime; no late fees.

Food, Food, Food

Scout Troup 44 will provide food and drinks. Lunch and supper will be available on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Please give them your support.

Prize Drawing

All racers will receive a ticket good for a prize drawing, which will be held at the conclusion of the awards ceremony. You must be present to win. All freestyle contestants will receive a ticket for a prize drawing to be held after the freestyle contest.

Open and Decked Boat Clinic

There will be a slalom clinic from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday. There will be a limited number of loaner boats available.

"REC" are ABS/Plastic boats or equivalent.
Open Boat Ages (age as of race day):
"Cadet" 16 or under.
"Junior" 18 or under.
"Senior" 25 and over.
"Master" 40 and over.
"Other" classes are any age.
Decked Boat Ages (age as of the year of competition):
"Cadet" 14 and under.

Team race - (No charge and sign-up is race day)

  • Classes may be combined if there is not a three boat minimum. Furthermore, classes may be added with a three boat minimum.
  • All boaters must wear helmets when on the course. Helmets will be available free of charge if you do not own one.
  • All paddlers must wear PFDs when on the course.
  • All racers must be responsible for a race assignment.
  • All racers will be expected to help with course takedown.
  • Awards will be given out after course takedown.

There will be a limited number of open canoes available free of charge for your use. Both slalom and recreational designs will be available. Please call Tussey Mountain Outfitters (814-355-5690) in advance.
