I'm pleased to announce this news of our inclusion in the ACA's listing (see following e-mail). I have deleted the attached press release because the list doesn't welcome attachments, but you can go to their website if you want to take a look. It's basically the same information as is here in the e-mail to me.
We want to acknowledge the enormous contribution of the Hudson River Valley Greenway in developing the official trail and in assisting us to publish the Sixth Edition of the Water Trail Guide. It's a great book, and available to members as part of the membership. I hope you'll join and keep your membership up to date so we'll have the funds when it comes time to publish the Seventh Edition!
As a bit of extra news, thanks to Bob Ihlenburg and his excellent helper Chuck Newland, both members of HRWA's Board of Directors, there is now a fine sign marking the shore of the VanSchaack Campsite at Bronck Island. We've had a steady stream of campers, with some leaving extra things for others to use (a fine picnic table, for one), and no vandalism. Do check it out! My husband and I paddled by this afternoon.
Join HRWA!

Hudson River Watertrail Association
Greetings from the American Canoe Association! We hope all our friends at the Hudson River Watertrail Association is doing well.
As you may know, in 2005, the American Canoe Association launched an initiative to support the development and promotion of water trails around the country, and thereby improve recreational paddling opportunities. As part of this initiative, the ACA selects several water trails each year for designation as "ACA-Recommended Water Trails." ACA-Recommended Water Trails are trails that meet certain threshold criteria and that we think stand out as particularly good destinations for paddlers.
I am writing you today to inform you that the Hudson River Water Trail has been selected as an ACA-Recommended Water Trail for 2006. Congratulations!
As an ACA-Recommended Trail, the Hudson River Water Trail has earned the right to use a special ACA logo on its website, maps, signs and other printed material related to the trail.
In addition, the trail will be given special recognition in the ACA's Water Trails Database, available at the following URL:
www.americancanoe.org/recreation/watertrails.lasso
This database, with information on 400 trails in the U.S. and Canada, is the most comprehensive water trails directory on the web. We invite you to visit the site and take a look. (We also encourage you to give us your feedback.)
This year's selection process was difficult. The competition was intense, and as a designee, your trail is in good company. The 2006 designees are:
a.. Appalachicola Paddling Trail System - Florida
b.. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Paddling Trails - Maryland
c.. Conodoguinet Creek Water Trail - Pennsylvania
d.. Hudson River Water Trail - New York
e.. Lower Mattaponi and Pamunkey Canoe Trail - Virginia
f.. Middle Allegheny River Water Trail - Pennsylvania
g.. Milwaukee Urban Water Trail - Wisconsin
h.. Muskingum River Water Trail - Ohio
i.. Ohio River Water Trail - Markland Pool Section - Ohio and Kentucky
j.. Potomac River Water Trail - Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia
k.. Tilghman Island Water Trail - Maryland
l.. Willamette River Water Trail - Oregon
On November 4, 2006, the ACA will hold its Annual Awards Banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn in Fairfax, Virginia. We invite you to join us at the Banquet so that we may recognize your trail as an ACA-Recommended Trail. The Banquet will be held in conjunction with the ACA's annual meeting, and will be an opportunity to meet many members of the ACA "family" and talk about water trails around the country. Contact the ACA National Office or visit the ACA website for more information about the Awards Banquet and annual meeting.
This email serves as advance notification of your trail's selection as a Recommended Trail. The ACA plans to make a public announcement of this year's designees on or about September 13, 2006. Our announcement will include distribution of a press release to regional media outlets and announcements to the ACA membership through ACA eNews and the ACA website. For a preview of our outreach efforts, review the attached EMBARGOED draft press release. If you would like to coordinate local media outreach, please let us know.
In the next few weeks, you will receive a CD containing the ACA-Recommended Water Trails logo. We encourage you to use this logo on your website and in your printed materials. You can visit the websites of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail to see examples of how last year's designees are using the logo.
Once again, CONGRATULATIONS, and keep up your good work on water trails. On behalf of ACA's members, thank you for making the world a better place to paddle!
