NYCkayaker Future of Pier 40 -- Cirque de Soleil??

Today's Post reports that the Related Companies's bid
to redevelop Pier 40 includes a proposal to create a
permanent home on the pier for Cirque du Soleil.

The only cited criticism is that having the circus
there will impede access to the garage and the
football fields.

Boaters' access to the water (and we're talking about
a P-I-E-R on the W-A-T-E-R) is nowhere mentioned,
especially not by any quoted HRPT representative.

What's wrong with this picture?

Note also that the Related Companies is very closely
connected to Deput Mayor Daniel Doctoroff (who
recently joked about the late disbursement of funds
for the new boathouse at the old DTBH pier) who is
known for his (failed) efforts to create a
tax-subsidized Olympic Stadium at the W. Side
railyards and helping Related get the Bronx Terminal
Market development deal (among many others).
