Rondout-West Branch Tunnel and Shaft Rehabilitation Project
DEP is pleased to announce the availability of the Environmental Assessment
for the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel and Shaft Rehabilitation Project. The
Environmental Assessment is available for viewing below. If you have any
questions, please contact Make Page Jr. at (718) 595-4395.
Project Description
DEP is proposing to perform rehabilitation work at six shaft locations along
the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel of the Delaware Aqueduct (Tunnel). The shafts
are located in the Towns of Wawarsing, Gardiner, Newburgh, Wappinger and
Putnam Valley. The Tunnel and Shaft Rehabilitation Project is being proposed in
order to prepare the tunnel for maintenance and rehabilitation to extend the
useable life of the Delaware Aqueduct and ensure the safe and reliable
transmission of water from the watershed for years into the future. The Delaware
Aqueduct is an 85-mile, concrete-lined, pressure conduit that is operated and
maintained by the DEP. The Aqueduct consists of a series of tunnels connecting
the Rondout, West Branch, Kensico, and Hillview Reservoirs. The Delaware
Water System provides approximately 50 percent of the water supply to the City
on an annual average basis. The Tunnel is a 45-mile segment of the Aqueduct
constructed between 1937 and 1944. All water from the Delaware Water System
flows through the Tunnel.
