This is very nice - what you wrote below. You echo many of my own sentiments. I truly enjoyed Jeff's good nature, his sense of camaraderie and his great sense of humor. He will be so missed in my kayaking travels.
-Steve

Subject: NYCkayaker Jeff Hoyer: A Kayaker's Passing
Sad news re Jeff's passing. Sad and totally unexpected. Jeff just showed up at swim supports in Coney Island, DUMBO or the upper West Side. Or he would pop up at kayaking trips I have posted and/or attended over the last six years such as Mamaroneck Harbor, Jamaica Bay, Piermont or fireworks at Peekskill. Jeff always showed up at the annual Manhattan Circs that Steve Blumling and I have organized over the past four years during August. And in 2002 I went around Manhattan for the first time on a trip "organized" by Erik Baard. Jeff was there too. And on two occasions Jeff stayed with Mike and I in Florida for a week or so during the winter while he kayaked most days and checked out South Beach and the South Florida culture on a few. Jeff was one of my kayaking friends that Mike, my non-kayaking partner, liked the most since Jeff was so urbane.Travel, politics, art, music, NYC real estate trends etc. I remember asking Jeff what he did for a living. He said that !
he was basically a musician always looking for bookings or bands. But to pay his expenses he was a computer consultant. Until recently Jeff would always show up 45 minutes before anyone else since he needed the time to assemble his folding kayak. Jeff Hoyer=a folding kayak. But recently he surprised me when he moved closer to Sebago and got himself a hardshell. I think it was a rotomolded plastic. This morning to remember Jeff, I searched his posts that have been saved by my aol system for the past two years. An impressive oeuvre. Jeff's email address is jkayak at sopoint.com. Jeff was an excellent writer. His trip reports read well; his frequent comments on kayaking issues were thoughtful. If anybody wants me to forward any of these, please let me know via back channel. This untimely death reminds me to stop dithering and get on the water. Each day may be our last. This last Tuesday was Jeff's last day. Jeff, I'll miss you. Jerry Blackstone ************************!
