Hey There,

It's never to early to start thinking about New Years with the Polar Bears
in Coney Island.

For the last couple of years a number of us have gone out to CI to do the
plunge with the Polar Bears. We take off our dry suits, pfds, etc do a
little barechested rolling when the drunk people jump in the water.

It's been a lot of fun. Last year Harry Spitz was the king bear. I was
shivering uncontrollably, and slipping into hypothermia after 10 minutes,
but Harry went for a leisurely nude paddle down the beach and did a few
more rolls before calmly getting changed.

Obviously you need a car to get out there. I'm definitely going, who is
with me? If you can't get a boat out there, but want to come by subway I'm
happy to lend my boat for a few rolls out after I do my plunge.

Afterward those of us with dry suits usually go for a paddle over to
Breezy Point for the afternoon. We will miss most of the surf on the
sandbar because of the tide, but there might be a bit of it if the swell
is big later in the afternoon.

Usually the bears provide a breakfast over at the Aquarium, and the local
food stands are usually open as well. Be sure to pay your registration and
sign-up. This is a big Charity event for the bears.
