This is from Sandy (olali1 at juno.com). "I went to Southeast Asia in September for the kayaking tour and some touring on my own, and had a wonderful time. For 2 1/2 weeks i was on an adventure tour led by a young guy named Mick O'Shea, who kayaked the entire length of the Mekong in 2004. He's Australian but lives in Lao with his Thai wife and runs a business called Wildside Asia. Since I've never traveled in a tour group I felt very fortunate to end up with him, whom I found in the Nat'l Geographic Adventure Magazine last year. I was drawn to the tour because it was a "water world" exploration of a number of fascinating places including Ha Long Bay in N. Vietnam, Luang Prabang in Laos, and the Mekong River itself. We paddled down the Mekong from S. Lao into Cambodia, and traveled overland to Siem Reap in Cambodia to visit Angkor Wat. We were to paddle into Angkor itself but were prevented by a government official who decided not to allow us in by kayak, at the last minute, in spite of permits. After the tour ended at Angkor, I continued following the river down into S. Vietnam and the Delta (not by kayak!).
Anyway, Mick made a film about his trip down the Mekong(Mother of Waters), and also wrote a book (In the Naga's Wake) that was just released in Australia, coming soon to the US. His film was shown at the Banff Interntl Mountain Film Festival in October, and is now on tour. Even though he's an amazing athlete and survived extreme conditions while kayaking the gorges of the upper Mekong in Tibet/China, his main intent is to bring the world's attention to the Chinese dam-building project on the upper Mekong, and the enormous impact these dams will have on the countries of the Mekong basin.
I am interested in helping to promote the film with the goal of creating a wider awareness and concern, so would love any feedback or suggestions."
