Off-duty fire captain rescues Long Island teenagers with kayak in Sound

NEW ROCHELLE -- Fire Captain Eric Lore always begins his morning with 90
minutes of kayaking in Echo Bay.

Good thing for two Long Island teenagers, who somehow got stranded this
morning on a kayak without paddles in the Sound.

"They were out all night and they were pretty cold," said the
52-year-old fire captain, who was off duty when he spotted the boys at 8
a.m. and towed them to shore with his own kayak.

The first thing the boys got at the nearby firehouse was blankets and
some warmed-up lentil soup.

The second thing they got was questions by New Rochelle police officers.

"They were chatting with the lads about where where they got the kayak,"
Fire Commissioner Raymond Kiernan said shortly after 9 a.m.
