There was great good feeling this morning at the beginning of the GHRP 2006. Because high tide was shortly after 7:00 a.m., according to the tables, there was some urgency to get everyone on the water, so formalities were very light this year. In the past, Mayor Jennings and many other dignitaries have come down to wish the paddlers a good trip, but today everyone was anxious to get going, so it was a paddling event, not a media event.
There was a light rain falling, but the water was calm and the spirits were high. Everyone was on the water and headed south by 8:30. I usually paddle with them for an hour or two before returning to the Albany launch, but this year I had other obligations, so I just watched until they were out of sight and headed home. In my neck of the woods, a light rain continued into the afternoon, but then the sun came out and it promises to be hot tomorrow after morning fog. Tonight the paddlers are enjoying the hospitality of the generous folks in New Baltimore. Tomorrow they'll paddle from New Baltimore to Athens. Check the HRWA web link (www.hrwa.org) to the GHRP to find the schedule; go out and cheer them on!
