See this description of the Thule Hullivator.  The website speaks of it 
in the future tense, but the website needs revision; the Hullivator is 
available, and I have seen it in use. I think it's a great idea.  The 
only problem is the price; it's on the steep side.  But worth it, if it 
keeps you independent.
