>Hey all,

>Before the story gets bastardized too much...

>Reggie and I took the OC-1's to the downtown boathouse. On our way back up,
>just north of the Hudson River Park, Reggie and I saw something about 50
>feet ahead of us. I thought it was a dead body. She thought it was a hippo.
>After the initial confusion, we noticed it was about 10-15 feet long, dark
>greyish/brown with white barnacles on its back. It then rolled back into
>the water but came to the surface for about 15 seconds. Reggie had seen a
>blowhole mist.
>
>When Reggie and I got back, we immediately told everyone. I then went out
>to novice practice but whoever called it into the Coast Guard, thank you.
>They reported it to the Riverhead Foundation who gave me a call for a
>description. I asked them what it could possibly be and they think it was a
>manatee. Very very rare this far north of the East Coast but there were a
>few sightings in Montauk a few years back but never in the Hudson.
>
>So keep an eye out for our new friend and report any sightings to the
>Riverhead Foundation at 631.369.9840 and talk to Becky.
>
>-----
>Now for more just as important but less exciting news.
>We took out 1 novice boat today with 7 paddlers and made it to New Jersey
>and back for a good 45 minute run. Thanks to Tiger and Amy Chen for
>stroking. Deena, Tony, Adi and Emma did a great job and I'm looking forward
>to going out with them again soon.
>Any volunteers for next week?
>
>Thanks...KEITH
