4 record setting times, 42 paddlers, crystal blue skies and hundreds of on lookers enjoy the 2006 Mayor’s Cup New York Kayak Championships.
Gold medal winning Olympic paddler Greg Barton had the best time of the day, an astounding 3:21:28 circumnavigation of Manhattan!! Joe Glickman turned in a time of 3:27:41 and Andrew Folpe & Mark Webber also turned in a time in a tandem ski of 3:35:41. All 3 breaking, former German Slalom Champ, Dorian Wolter’s time of 3:43:00 in a surf ski. OC1 paddler Gary Krapt broke the exhisting OC1 time of 3:59:00 by almost 7 minutes with a 3:52:52 time.
Local paddlers from the New York region dominated the divisions taking advantage of local knowledge and local conditions to place solidly through out.
The Mayor’s Cup event was the premiere part to the New York Waterfest. A day devoted to raising awareness for the Hudson River and raising money for Riverkeeper. Many folks enjoyed a day of rafting. 20 - 12 foot commercial whitewater rafts left Pier 96 and paddled down to North cove marina.
