Thanks for noting the piece. Folks should check out Harry's gorgeous
photos of people paddling the kill, especially local youths.
Waterwire's publisher and editors can claim much of the credit for the
piece and the fact that these lesser-known tributaries are being
highlighted!
Also, I want to add some compelling quotations from Basil Seggos about
the water park planned for Randalls Island that simply came too late
for publication:
"One large concern I have is that with this kind of park water
conservation measures thrown out the window. We've made great progress
with things like low-flow toilets, but this effectively eliminates
conservation measures."
Chlorinated water is supposed to sit for a week to aerate before being
dumped. When it's discharged too soon, that's when you see big fish
kills." He noted that in Westchester County a town pool caused fish
kills through improper discharge.
"Another important issue is the alienation of parkland because this
will privatize well-used ball fields."
Contrasting aquatic theme parks with access to natural reserves he
said, "We think from a recreation point of view the harbor is
underutilized and we have great public resources that should be cleaned
up and taken full advantage of. We could have boating and potential
beaches created on the waterfront. That's a more appropriate place for
the city to set its resources, not to develop private water parks on
public land."
Thanks again!
