Thanks, Ralph. All true. And hey, the fat lady, she has not yet commenced to sing - things are still very much in play, as evidenced by Nancy's email about the CB4 meeting.
And speaking of growth...has anybody here heard of the Kayak Valet thingummy on Saturday, 9/23? Got this, quite bizarrely, through my schooner circle. I know absolutely nada zero zippo zilch about it but figured I'd pass it on. This is something like the 5th fun kayak thing I can't do that weekend 'cause I have houseguests.
Red Hook really is quite neat & absolutely worth a visit.
Here's the details:

Hello All!
Here's a fun event on Sat 9/23 that needs some volunteers to run smoothly.
http://www.portsidenewyork.org/Ole%20Kayak%20Valet.htm
The Kayak Valet concept is a first here as far as we know.
The hope is that a large turnout of boats will demonstrate the need for a
boathouse, a place where visitors paddling to Red Hook could regularly leave
boats. (Red Hook folks could use it too).
We'd also like to turn people on to Red Hook and to boating, and use this
opportunity to hand out information on safe boating near commercial boat
traffic.
You don't need to commit to a full day, but it would be great if you could
commit to at least a two-hour segment. The full event runs from
11:00am-7:00pm, though I expect most boats will be gone well before 7pm as
boats will want to get home before dark. Set-up starts at 10:30am.
10:30am-1:00pm
1:00pm-3:00pm
3:00pm-5:00pm
5:00pm-7:00pm
Volunteers are needed before the event for following:
⢠post flyers around the area
⢠assemble and laminate boat safety info we'll have at a table
⢠pick up the tent at Target (PortSide pays for it)
⢠deal with media to list this event
Volunteers are needed during the event for following:
⢠set up our tent, tables, chairs, coolers with our beverages
⢠log in visitors (write down name and contact number, give em a tag, put
matching tag on kayak)
⢠Answer VHF calls from paddlers, if any
⢠provide directions to places in Red Hook; hand out Red Hook maps
⢠sit at table with boater safety info (best if an experienced boater or
someone from the marine industry is at this table)
⢠keep an eye on kayaks and move them as necessary
⢠match returning boaters to their kayaks (match tag to boat, if tag is
missing, match name to picture ID)
Please forward to anyone you think would be interested in paddling here or
in helping with the event.
That's all for now!
Thanks!
Best,
Carolina
