NYCkayaker NYC Canoeing Novel?

Does anyone know about a novel, written roughly a
decade ago, about canoeing in New York City, possibly
on the East River? Below is a description of the plot.
If you know the title of the novel, please let me

Plot summary: A man is canoing in the river (East
River perhaps?)and is blown by a storm onto a small
island inhabited by a young man who believes himself
to be the last descendant of a native American tribe.
He tries to live as much like his presumed ancestors
as he can and knows NY history and geography in
detail. The two men become something like friends...?
