New York, New York - Opponents of the massive Broadwater/Shell
liquefied natural gas industrial barge proposed for Long Island Sound
will hold an educational event outside the NY League of Conservation
Voters cocktail party at Christie's at 20 Rockefeller Plaza in New
York City
on Thursday, December 6, 2007, beginning at 5:30 pm. Attendees of the
annual cocktail party will be informed about the destructive and
violent impacts of the Broadwater/Shell mega-project on human rights
and the environment. Attendees will be encouraged to oppose the
project. The NY League of Conservation Voters will also be educated
about the environmental and human rights impacts of Broadwater/Shell
so that they may join the opposition to Broadwater.
Delegates from environmental organizations in Long Island and New York
City are joining forces to urge the League of Conservation Voters to
recognize that liquid natural gas is an illusory twentieth century
answer to the twenty-first century all-to-real problem: climate
change.
"The Broadwater/Shell liquefied natural gas project is a scam. When
one takes into account the amount of fossil-fuels needed to extract
natural
gas - compress, liquefy, refrigerate, transport, store and re-gasify
it the total pollutants and contributions to climate change
generated by
liquid natural gas approach those from burning coal," declared Energy
consultant and Professor of Environmental Studies Peter Maniscalco,
pointing to recent Greenpeace reports on liquefied natural gas.
"Mayor Bloomberg's PLANY 2030 relies heavily on new sources of
natural gas to replace coal plants, re-power old plants and build new
gas
facilities. This is why 70% of Broadwater's gas is targeted for NY
City," said Robert Jereski, an environmental educator in New York
City.
"But if liquefied natural gas is almost as filthy as coal, what's the
point? The point for Shell is that they've created a multi-billion
dollar hoax that will fill Shell's coffers for decades to come."
Shell Oil has vast liquefied natural gas holdings in Nigeria where the
company has devastated the environment, economy and culture of people
like the Ogoni nation in the Niger Delta. In addition, a federal
lawsuit - filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights and pending in
Manhattan Federal Court - charges Shell Oil with human rights
violations in the death of Nobel Peace Prize nominee Ken Saro-wiwa.
"The Broadwater/Shell project is an environmental and economic scam
with serious ethical and moral implications and should be rejected by
all environmental and human rights organizations, including the New
Yorki League of Conservation Voters" .
