The area that the kite surfer died in is accessible from many locations.
This is personal for me since this is the spot where I have paddled the
most, often alone and at night. I access it from a state launch 3 miles
away, up the Housatonic River. You drop your boat into a river with strong
tidal flows, paddle though a large marsh on the eastern side, marinas on the
western side, or a deep channel down the center. When you reach the mouth
of the river the site in question is to the west, off of Stratford Beach.
Conditions are unpredictable. They are also a lot of fun.
I've been out there alone at 11PM. The surf can pick up quickly and tidal
currents are 2 to 3 knots. If things went bad and I wasn't able to self
rescue it would be my name in the newspaper.
