The missing kayaker found unresponsive Monday in Little Egg Harbor in
southern New Jersey was pronounced dead after attempts to revive him
were unsuccessful, Coast Guard officials said last night.
Robert Gaudiosi, 22, was found in the water of Little Egg Harbor on
Christmas Eve, said Thomas Peck, a Coast Guard spokesman based in
Atlantic City.
Gaudiosi had been reported missing earlier Monday when he did not return
from a short trip. He was not wearing a life jacket or survival gear for
cold weather, Peck said. He was found by a Coast Guard helicopter in
Little Egg Harbor south of the Manahawkin Bridge, Peck said. Gaudiosi's
kayak was found overturned, officials said.
"It makes it very difficult to find someone who is wearing camouflage
... and they are not able to signal us that they're in trouble," Peck said.
The victim was pulled unresponsive from the 48-degree waters, officials
said. Gaudiosi did not respond to attempts to revive him and was flown
to Atlantic City Medical Center.
Gaudiosi's mother reported him missing around 3 p.m., about four hours
after he left home, telling relatives he was "going out for a short
kayak trip" but not saying where.
