I can attest to Jerry's wonderful hospitality and to the great trips run by his SE Florida colleagues.

Subject: NYCkayaker Kayaking in Florida: Winter 2007

  Hi All:

My annual invitation from the South------

I live in Fort Lauderdale in the Winter and in Yonkers in the Summer(YPRC).

If you wish to kayak in my neck of the woods this winter, I would be glad to show you around.

Each Tues. and Thirs my Florida kayaking group goes on a day trip. We meet at 10AM and launch at 10:30. Our trips usually run 10 miles. We stop midway for lunch either at a restaurant or at a beach( picnic) .

On weekends two clubs run trips--Blazing Paddlers based in Fort Lauderdale and Paradise Paddlers based in Key Largo. Often these club trips are multiday kayak camping adventures

Florida offers both urban and rural paddling.

Last Tuesday we paddled from the Pelican Harbor on the 79th Street Causeway in Miami south 5 miles on Biscayne Bay. We had a picnic lunch on Flagler Memorial Island(Monument Island). Then we paddled north and east along Indian Creek in Miami Beach taking us past the Fountainbleau and Eden Roc hotels. This total circuit was 13.4 miles.

Tomorrow we launch from Oleta State Park in North Miami. Perhaps we'll paddle out to the Ocean thru the Haulover Inlet. Maybe we'll go north on the Oleita River or maybe north on the Bay.

A partial menu of local trips in addition to those mentioned already:
  1. Miami River
  2. Pioneer Park in Deerfield Beach
  3. Circumnavigate Virginia Key with a stop at Jimbos
  4. Key Largo--Largo Sound and/or Duesenberry Creek
  5. Circumnavigate Wilton Manor
  5. George English Park in Fort Lauderdale and the Fort Lauderdale Canals leading to the New River
  6. Holland Park/West Lake in Hollywood and up Whisky Creek abd maybe exit to Ocean through Port Everglades
  7. Coral Gables waterway with a stop at the Biltmore Hotel
  8. Turner River in Everglades City

Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami again has a wonderful glass exhibit by Dale Chihuly. Seeing his creations after dark on Thurs evenings all lit up among hundred and hundreds of plants !!!! Totally different experience from seeing them during the day.
A link to this exhibit is:

If you make it down, the daily costs need not be large. Motels two miles from the Fort Lauderdale Airport on State Road 84 are only $75 per night. And these motels are a ten minute walk to a put-in on the South Fork of the New River. So you could closeup your office in NYC at 5PM and be in your kayak before Nightline signs off--the same night.

Or find a relative in Century Village and pay them a surprise visit !!!!
Everybody knows that if you pick the right day, Jet-Blue brings you down here from Kennedy OR LaGuardia in STYLE for only $69

The surf temperature is 69F. So, if you wear a wet suit, you might overheat !!!! And the locals might giggle

I have sit-on-top and one guest sea kayak I would be happy to lend you. Or maybe I can get one of my Florida friends to help out SO--

  COMEON DOWN
For a week or a long weekend.
Before you come you might want to go to Barnes and Nobles or Borders and pick up Nigel Foster's SEA KAYAKING IN SOUTHERN FLORIDA

Let me know by e-mail or phone if you want any assistance so that you can get right on the water when your plane lands.

  See you on the water

PS--I still prefer paddling the Hudson Valley and New York Harbor.. But that is for another time
