WATERMAN
Apart From the Pack
By Timothy Small

The water is Jeremy Grosvenor’s home. There, he can just about do it
all.
(07/03/2007)    Jeremy Grosvenor was the only one of 12 paddlers to use
a stand-up paddle surfboard last summer in the 18-mile “Miracle Paddle”
from Montauk Point to Block Island. Looking as if he were walking on
water, he managed to stay ahead of the pack the entire journey.
“He was almost like a godlike figure studying the water, deciding
what route to take,” one paddler said at the time. That feat epitomizes
the Bridgehampton waterman, who tends to stand out from the rest of the
pack.
Once marked by individualism, as a subculture of surfing, wave
riding has evolved into a mainstream culture more obedient and
conformist than it is rebellious. Grosvenor, however, still rides to the
beat of his own drum.
“There are millions of different types of birds, and they all fly,”
he said last week. “It’s the same thing with wave riding. It happens to
be that tri fins and a short board are the main [vehicle], but it
doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways.”
Unlike many wave-riders, who tend to commit to one vehicle of
choice, Grosvenor is enthusiastic about practically every option:
surfing, whether shortboarding and longboarding, prone paddleboarding,
stand-up paddle surfing, airmat surfing, sailing, and outrigger
canoeing, to name just a few. He teaches most of those sports.
