Coast Guard Rescues Missing Kayaker
July 5, 2007 - 3:23pm
CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. -- A College Park man who set out for a quick kayaking
trip was rescued by the Coast Guard after he drifted and became stranded
overnight.
Tom Moorhead, 47, drifted more than five miles, after setting out from his
vacation home near Chincoteague.

"He was only trying to go out for a 2-mile journey, and the winds and
current took him, and he was unable to battle the current and the wind,"
Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Rick Ball says.

Moorhead took shelter in an old hunting lodge, and the Coast Guard found him
around 9 a.m. Thursday.

"When we found him [Thursday] morning, he was obviously mentally and
physically exhausted. His feet were pretty cut up. He was walking in mud and
crushed oyster shells," Ball says.

He was treated at a nearby hospital for cuts and exhaustion.
