Rudders

I subscribe to the “Don’t need no stinkin rudder” school of
thought. For a beginner just starting out I believe it’s an especially bad idea.
It can interfere with proper bracing positioning of your knees in the thigh
hooks because it’s hard to coordinate using the foot peddles and locking your knees
at the same time. It can also waste an awful lot of energy until the subtleties
of not over steering are mastered. Most longer boats have no problem tracking
straight anyway.

My advice (in the category of free advice being worth every
penny you pay for it) would be to stay away from using a rudder until such time
as you are comfortable paddling, leaning, turning, and bracing without one.
After that you can join my school of thought or choose the dark side.

See you on the water
