NYCkayaker NYCKayaker Digest, Vol 23, Issue 19

Knowing the difference in theory is not enough. Where can one find tide chart that has tide CURRENT information???
 
When I used to paddle in San Francisco Bay, the tide chart has TWICE as many columns: besides time of high/low tide and tide height, there's also time for slack and max current AND strength... I've NOT been able to find that for the Hudson at most locations we paddle! 
 
Even with the uncertainty that's affected by weather such as rain fall and snow melt, the tide CURRENT chart would at least get you closer to the real current.

I always find that most people don't know the
difference between tides (vertical movements of the
water) and currents (horizontal movement).

I have read Craig Poole's excellent article in the
HRWA guide, and have heard it said by Steve Stanne of
NYS DEC in  apresentation.

Two diffrerent things, related of course, but on their
own timetables.

When you get used to paddling on the Hudson, you
really need to know what happens. Or you get stuck
paddling into a current, which isn't the end of the
World...  or World's End?
