This past Saturday David Gottlieb and I set out from Foundry Dock Park in Cold Spring to paddle north to Plum Point. An earlier post on one of the kayaking lists had informed us that the Adirondack Mountain Club was holding a paddle fest there. The weather was quite hot and hazy and the water calm as can be. As we approached we noticed even from afar that there was quite a lot of activity at our destination. EMS had brought a lot of demo kayaks and there was quite a lot of newbie's trying out a large variety of kayaks. Also present was the River Connection with an assortment of Impex kayaks.
To our surprise we noticed several skin boats. We landed on the large beach that Plum Point is famous for and were greeted by Jack and Maggie. They came with a group that was demonstrating Greenland kayaks. David took advantage of a free rolling lesson from Jack, while Maggie showed off her rolling skills using a seal bladder. After greeting and chit-chatting with several other friends we had our lunch on one of the picnic tables.
Later several of us set out to explore near by Moodna Creek.
As the afternoon wore on we kept our eye on the sky since conditions were ideal for possible thunderstorms. David and I headed back to Cold Spring via Bannerman's Island. When we reached the island the wind kicked up fierce and we heard the thunder and saw lightening rapidly approaching. We opted to seek shelter and land the kayaks as best we could.
Somehow the storm never really materialized and 30 minutes later we were back on our way, to arrive in Cold Spring in time to have dinner there. We had hoped to stick around for Walt's full moon paddle. Since he had posted earlier that the moon would not rise until 11:15 PM and he would be sleeping by then, we thought it prudent to do the same and headed for home.
For those that participated and others that are interested I have posted an album with the days events at:
