NYCkayaker Kayaking Death In Maine

The Maine newspaper article I read  did not mention anything about what
they were wearing, the only equipment I gathered from the article was
the deceased kayaker did have a pump and cable leash. They did not
mention the lack of thermal clothing, or lack of pfd.
I realize the importance of proper thermal protection; remember thin
Gore-Tex or pack cloth dry suit without proper undergarments may not
provide much thermal protection in 42-degree water.  I used to dive
shipwrecks in that temperature water, even with a crushed neoprene dry
suit you needed a relatively thick thinsulate suit to stay some what
unfrozen. However, there was evidence of equipment failure, the paddle
or leash.  This should not be over looked because people want to believe
that a cell phone or radio would have saved them.
Of course, people that have the waterproof vhf radio with known working
batteries and rescue gear on their torso stand a better chance than ones
that have it stowed on the kayak.
