Pelican cases appear to work best for non-waterproof SLRs, although they're
sometimes too bulky for the cockpit. I also used a small watertight bag for
SLRs.
But, after years of missing shots because I was wrestling with bags and
boxes, I bought a Pentax Optio W10. It's 6 MP, waterproof and fits into a
PFD pocket. It even shoots underwater, although only to about 10 feet.
Nevertheless, that's fine for "dip" shots from a kayak. And it takes
surprisingly good outdoor photos.
The latest iteration is the W30 (7 MP). Olympus also came out with a
waterproof camera recently.
