Here-here, Tracy.

We all need to be very careful about our desires to ban something based
on what we think makes sense. There are plenty of folks -- like the
tanker captain Ralph mentioned recently -- who feel that kayakers have
no "business" being on the water in the harbor. Don't be casting stones
without being prepared to have some cast at you. The river is a public
resource, and for 1 day a year they permit this event. We all know it's
coming, and we need to be tolerant of views that are not our own.

In very indirect ways we paddlers may have even benefited from events
like this one. Just as our commuter cars have racing pedigree suspension
and drive train components, the boat racing teams spend lots of money on
researching and developing new materials like carbon fiber fabrication &
kevlar skins. Many of us benefit from the technologies originally
perfected in the high-end powerboat realm.

Let's suck it up, be the inclusive ones, and find a way to share the
precious resource of the Hudson River. If we start fighting amongst
ourselves, we may all find our access snatched away one day.

If there were an easy answer to this problem, we would have solved it
long ago...

btw, I kind of like bell peppers... ;-)
