The timing this time (and other times) was unfortunate but hardly warrants
taking the swim organizers to task.  This is a shared waterway.  The
presence of the cigarette boats is a nuisance in terms of noise and wake.
Given where they are on the water, nearly a mile across on the other side of
the HudsonSwim, they do not represent a direct danger as did that
recalcitrant small oil tanker.  Other races have had much worse sea
conditions than that created by the cigarette boats.  In some, an occasional
careless motor boat escort has been a greater menace for kayakers and
swimmers.
