YONKERS -Boaters and others should avoid contact with the Hudson River
today, because a broken sewer line that has dumped millions of gallons
of raw sewage into the water has not yet been repaired.

The leak was reported yesterday afternoon. Westchester County work crews
had to bring in fill and build a road just to reach the sewer, said Tom
Lauro, the acting commissioner of the county's Department of
Environmental Facilities.

"The machines were getting bogged down," he said. "It's a difficult area
to get to."

Lauro said his crews hope to stop the leak by the end of the day today.
By 1 p.m., about 4 million gallons will have spilled into the Hudson,
Lauro said.

Meanwhile, crews have been pumping the sewage into storm drains so it
does not overflow the nearby Metro-North tracks, Lauro said. The train
tracks run between the pipe and the river.

The leak has not affected train service or residential sewer service,
Lauro said.

The leak is in a 48-inch diameter line that carries sewage from
Irvington to the North Yonkers pumping station.
