Subject: Mike's about to enter surgery

Just spoke to a very medicated Mike Samuel. He's in St. Vincent's ICU,
and is now (at least groggily) talking to friends and awaiting surgery
at 1PM today, Tuesday.

Mike told me that on Sunday he was by himself, walking (w/o bicycle)
across the West Side Highway @ 56th to reach the kayak club he
participates in and teaches at. Was hit by a motorcyclist (that person
unfortunately died).
Mike's injuries were a tib-fib fracture in the left leg (will require a
pin insertion), and damage in the right hand (will require
"stabilization").

The hospital general number is (212) 604-7000 (when msg starts, press 1
for English, then press 2 at the start of the next prompt which jumps
you to "friend or relative in the hospital", then press 1 "friend or
relative admitted"), and Mike is in the 12E wing or floor. He seemed to
want phone calls for now.

Hospital visiting hours are 11A-11P; address is 153 W. 11th Street. Mike
is scheduled to go home tomorrow if all goes well, and will be staying
at a friend's for a while.

He's only 1-handed typing, so if you do email , best not to ask long
questions. He'll easily be able to read posts to this thread in a few
days when he's online again.

For those who do not know Mike - - he's a terrific person, a graphics
designer who has done bulletin covers and a jersey for NYCC (see the
recently added NYCC site jersey archives), raced track bikes previously,
participated in the early SIG startups, rides in CPk with his buddies a
lot (and kayaks a lot).

Please join in with good thoughts and prayers for Mike.

I'll post updates here.
