Detailed Description: In 1993, shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union,
four Americans embarked on a 28-day descent of the hardest whitewater river
in the Soviet Union, with 10 Latvians they met by chance. Bruce Edgerly, Van
Wombwell and Ben Hammond and Explorers
Club member Eugene Buchanan had received a Shipton-Tilman grant -- the first
that W.L. Gore & Associates had ever awarded for a river expedition -- to
run the relatively mild Kalar River.

But when their connection fell through, Latvia's Team Konkas found them at
the airport. Soon after their vodka-fueled introduction met the Moscow dawn,
all 14 adventurers were boarding the train for Siberia's feared Bashkaus
River in a land where the gear is
homemade, local horsemen go crazy on strong tea, memorials to dead paddlers
perch on the banks, and, as at an execution, nothing can happen until a last
cigarette is smoked.

Tonight in a tale of adventure, friendship and meeting of cultures, enjoy
the unadulterated spirit of whitewater adventure as Explorers Club member
Eugene Buchanan takes you on a white-knuckled ride with a bunch of crazies
down one of the world's wildest rivers in rafts made from germ-warfare suits
equipped with life jackets made from old
soccer balls and old wine bladders.

A contributor to Men's Journal's "The Great Life" anthology and National
Geographic Adventure, Buchanan's passion for traveling, writing and paddling
has taken him to more than 30 countries on six of the seven continents, from
Australia and Africa to South America and Siberia. An avid adventurer with
several first descents to his credit, Eugene is profiled in the new book
"Adventurous Dreams, Adventurous Lives: Today's Explorers Recall the
Youthful Dreams Launching their Remarkable Lives" by Club member Jason
Schoonover FI'86.
