http://keep.typepad.com/gowanus_oyster_stewards/
Gowanus Oyster stewardship runs all winter long! Our 2007 baby
oysters have arrived and need adoption.
The bottom of the New York-New Jersey Harbor was once covered with
oyster reefs that filtered the entire Harbor in one day. Due to over
fishing and pollution at the turn of the century, the eastern oyster
(Crassostrea virginica) was virtually eradicated. Today, water quality
has improved greatly, and oysters have begun to reappear after an
absence of more than 100 years, but only in some places, and in low
numbers. Join the Oyster Stewards and help improve the water quality
by helping oysters grow.
