NYCkayaker Ederle Swim - Battery PArk to Sandy Hook this Sat 10/06 - Request for Marine Radio

I don't have a radio to offer, but on the subject or radios: I just moved
back to NYC, from Switzerland. Has it become more important to carry a
marine radio since 9/11? If so, is there a FAQ on the subject?
