thanks for the post about the (lack of) safety devices in hudson river park,
mike.
the issue has been raised several times recently at HRPT Advisory Council
meetings by myself and others.
the assertion that ladders which would provide egress from the water cannot
be installed as they would provide a way for people to get into the water is
absurd.
we've also suggested life rings be installed at various points along the
(nearly impossible to scale) seawall in the park, and have been told that
they are too likely to be stolen, so the park doesnt want to buy them.
unbelievable.
we are planning to form a working group within the Council to address the
issue and are interested in seeing examples of safety devices used in other
cities, and collecting other suggestions of ways to address the problem.
if you have any suggestions or photos of other cities' solutions, please
send them to me back channel.
