Once again we're supporting the New York Buddhist Church & Interfaith
Center of New York in the Floating Lanterns Ceremony on the south
side of Pier 40, next Tuesday evening, September 11. We're looking
for kayakers who will help tow the strings of floating lanterns out
into the embayment and fasten the string to a floating rope. If you'd
like to participate, please send an email and I'll respond with
volunteer details and a reservation form - we can provide a boat, pfd
and paddle at no charge if you don't want to use your own. See event
details below.

7:45pm	Floating lighted lanterns to Hudson River (-9pm)

A traditional floating lanterns ceremony commemorating the
victims for the WTC tragedy will take place on Tuesday, September 11,
2007 at the Pier 40 (south side). The ceremony will be led by Rev.
TK Nakagaki, head Buddhist minister of the New York Buddhist Church,
assisted in the water by the Interfaith Center of New York.
Each year people in Hiroshima, Japan, gather to float
lanterns in remembrance of the victims of the atomic bombings and all
victims of war. The New York Buddhist Church continues this
beautiful and moving tradition for the fourth time on the Hudson
River with specific reference to the 9-11 tragedy. The event is free
(donation is appreciated) and the public invited. Information:
212-678-0305, www.newyorkbuddhistchurch.org
The ancient custom of “Floating lighted Lanterns” in the
waterways is a symbolic way of respecting the lives that have gone
before us. Also, it can represent a light of hope for peace and
harmony that e sent out over the waters of transmigration. As we
pay respect to the lives which were lost at the World Trade Center,
we offer the light of hope for a peaceful world in which no one else
will suffer. This very colorful, but quiet and serene ceremony
provides a place to reaffirm our commitment to building a peaceful
future.
This event is supported by Downtown Boathouse Volunteers and
New York Kayak Company. Also supported by the Buddhist Council of New
York and LIC Community Boathouse, and co-sponsored by New York
Disaster Interfaith Service (NYDIS)
