One of the problems I have seen with a lot of clubs and organizations that
receive any support from the local government and authorities is their
inability to confront and take on controversial issues. Many bicycle clubs
will not push too hard for correcting of inadequacies since they need
permission and local govt support to host their annual fundraising events.
Local kayak clubs may be wary of their membership expressing their opinion
for fear of losing the support and possible repercussions of the local
powerbrokers.
Race organizers cannot say what they really think of the coast guard f*#@
Ups since they want to continue to hold the race next year. The coast guard
has interfered and in all probability changed the winning finish of races
held here in NYC..
I remember in scuba diving /wreck diving days when the coast guard would go
to local wreck site in international waters and try to stop the dive boats
from diving on it. They overstep their bounds, authority, and need to be
reigned in and called on it when they do this. They no nothing about scuba
diving either, their divers never recover the tragics, they don't have the
experience.
The nighttime 4th of July powerboat harbor lock is a much bigger hazard than
any group kayak event and that is always allowed to take place without
permits.

Mike, I agree with you. I believe the US Coast Guard serves a purpose in
heavily organized events. Whether they be kayaking, swimming, or monitoring
cigarette boat races (the latter which they don't monitor very well, and
which pose much more of a danger for all on the water!!!!) (And look at the
discussion we had on the cigarette Poker Run. That discussion went on ad
nauseum, but it eventually petered out. Which is what would have happened to
this discussion on the USCG, if the owner of the list serve, who I am sure
is a fine person, decided to ignore complaints, if there were any. I have
heard complaints about this discussion from others. I think freedom of
speech, as long as there is some relevancy to kayaking, no matter what the
subject - cigarette boats, sea turtles, dredging, pollution, sculling,
mermaid parades, oysters and the USCG - should be tolerated and is very
important, and is one of the foundations of our society..
There should be no CENSORSHIP on this topic as long as it is relevant to
kayaking. (Often there are posts completely irrelevant to kayaking, but I
don't care. I know how to go through them and ignore them if I choose, which
I have done for many discussions here. I have a delete button.) However, I
am still reading the posts on the CG, even though there hasn't been anything
new said on the subject recently. And I made my opinions clear on one post
and only one post about the topic.
