I would highly recommend getting out and paddling this week because you can catch the sweet short seasonal moment---the monarch butterflies are just flying all over the place on their long journey to wherever...It is so beautiful while your out on there in the middle of the river. I highly recommend it...and---- they are all over... One of my favorite things that happen every year paddling in this area.

I believe the US Coast Guard serves a purpose in heavily organized events. Whether they be kayaking, swimming, or monitoring cigarette boat races (the latter which they don’t monitor very well, and which pose much more of a danger for all on the water!!!!) (And look at the discussion we had on the cigarette Poker Run. That discussion went on ad nauseum, but it eventually petered out. Which is what would have happened to this discussion on the USCG, if the owner of the list serve, who I am sure is a fine person, decided to ignore complaints, if there were any. I have heard complaints about this discussion from others. I think freedom of speech, as long as there is some relevancy to kayaking, no matter what the subject — cigarette boats, sea turtles, dredging, pollution, sculling, mermaid parades, oysters and the
USCG — should be tolerated and is very important, and is one of the foundations of our society..

There should be no CENSORSHIP on this topic as long as it is relevant to kayaking. (Often there are posts completely irrelevant to kayaking, but I don’t care. I know how to go through them and ignore them if I choose, which I have done for many discussions here. I have a delete button.) However, I am still reading the posts on the CG, even though there hasn’t been anything new said on the subject recently. And I made my opinions clear on one post and only one post about the topic.

Mike, Please forward this to the owner of the list serve... Censorship, no matter how many complaints, has no place on this list serve. Keeping to topic of kayaking should be adhered to by all members,. We should not tolerate abusive language or attacks on other members of the list serve, but that is where the limits go.

Keep this thread to kayaking is the responsibility of all members. Controversial topics have a life of there own and then usually die out.... Censorship is bad. I hope the owner of this list serve, who does an incredible service to the kayaking community by maintaining the list serve, realizes this.... But we should not stop talking about these issues because of a few whiners... Further, the CG discussion brings up relevant points of safety and of event organization and of the kayaker’s place in the sea of shipping and boating....Yes, I think the CG discussion has been played out a while back, but please let the discussion die its own natural death and not via the nefarious sword of censorship....

I just received this message back channel,
I think it speaks for itself. Ban me, but I have no use for a list that restrict relevant communications on NY harbor kayak related matters.
   “HRWA and it is this
association that provides this list as a paddles place
to meet and find places to paddle. I can appreciate
your feelings regarding the USCG however they are the
deciding factor in the port / harbor of NY. If you
wish to continue a discussion within this subject
range please continue it with that agency. This
subject has been fully covered. If you wish to
continue this discussion "back channel" with me please
 do not hesitate.”

Thank you for your cooperation in this mater.
