NYCkayaker Minor administrivia -- sending addresses and CC's

1. Please try to send list traffic from the address that you're subscribed
at. Mailman (which handles the list here) is configured to divert mail
from unknown addresses to the list owner, which more or less means it
throws those messages into Jeremy's lap, which in turn means that they
sit in a queue until he has time to deal with them. (Why do we do this?
Because rejecting messages from non-list-members nails a heck of a lot
of the spam that makes it past other measures.)
2. Please don't CC'd lots of people on list traffic. There are three
reasons for that: first, once the number of recipients gets high enough,
Mailman diverts the message (yup, to Jeremy again). Second, if the
number is small enough and the message goes through, the CC'd people
will either be on the list or they won't. If they're on the list, we
get complaints about duplicate copies. If they're not on the list, we
get complaints demanding removal (from a list they're not on). Third,
if people who are CC'd but aren't on the list try to follow up -- then
we're back to point #1 above again. It's just messy all around.
I know that both of these can be onerous from time to time, but unfortunately
they've gone from "optional" mailing list practices ten years ago to
just about "required" today because of rampant abuse. ("rampant" in
this case means 30-50 spams/day aimed at nyckayaker, most of which
we manage to nail before they get into Mailman.)
