If its any help I use Teak Oil that I picked up at Home Depot. I asked this question when I was building 
my first paddle & got answers from baby oil to anything that would soak into the wood. I decided on 
Teak oil because right or wrongly I figured They use teak wood on yacht decks & the choice at 
Home Depot was between that and tung oil. 
I have been told that any oil will do & have had no problem with the teak.
I don't thing the Inuits in Greenland had access to epoxy when they made their first paddles several 
thousand years ago and I don't its P.C. today to use Whale Oil.
