Thanks to all who made suggestions! Clearly oil is the way to go. I've got
my Watco Danish Oil, unexpectedly found at Lowes, tomorrow I'll start
sanding...

If its any help I use Teak Oil that I picked up at Home Depot. I asked this
question when I was building
my first paddle & got answers from baby oil to anything that would soak into
the wood. I decided on
Teak oil because right or wrongly I figured They use teak wood on yacht
decks & the choice at
Home Depot was between that and tung oil.
I have been told that any oil will do & have had no problem with the teak.
I don't thing the Inuits in Greenland had access to epoxy when they made
their first paddles several
thousand years ago and I don't its P.C. today to use Whale Oil.
regards?
Ron
