Hello, NYCKayakers!

My name is Mike and I am happy to join the group! 

I grew up in New Hampshire and did a fair amount of boating. I recently purchased my first kayak here in Jersey City and criss-crossed the Hudson a few times on Sunday. It was quite an education, to say the least, and I learned that built-up commercial shipping channels with strong currents are a different animal than the rivers of New England.

I really hope to explore the metro area's "ghost" channels by kayak, places like the Arthur Kill ship graveyard, Shooter's Island, Gowanus and Maspeth canals, the lower Passaic, etc. Not very scenic places, but I have a taste for adventure and urban archeology.

I'm in good shape and I believe all of these are completely legal to kayak to and around. Is there anybody on the list with experience or interest in this kind of exploring? I think it would do me well to team up with people with some experience in the area.

I also look forward to general outings in the region, and to meeting the local paddlesport community.
