NYCkayaker Steinway Creek

Ahoy'all,

ConEd is likely to sell a large chunk of real estate to FedEx. If we are
smart, this might bring the banks of the Steinway Creek into community
hands.

I have written of our interest in the site to the harbor community's friend
and ally, Dorothy Lewandowski, the Queens Commissioner for NYC Department of
Parks and Recreation. My gut is that the site is out of the way enough that
a large paddling program and boathouse wouldn't likely blossom immediately.
But a storage container or shack on the adjacent parking lot and wetlands
restoration (marsh grasses, oysters, native shoreline plantings) would be
appropriate.

There are adjacent ball fields, the Brooklyn-Queens greenway will pass it (a
bike lane exists on 20th Avenue), and 31st Street runs up the western side.
There's great potential in the long run.
