"Novices do not belong on the East river, period."
What about Bushwick Inlet? That's on the East River. What about that flat
that runs up the Manhattan side from about 14th street to the UN, out of the
channel and alway sheltered from the prevailing southwest? What about
Halletts Cove, or the Bronx River or Westchester Creek, or Flushing Bay?
What about the fearsome Hell Gate itself, where East River Crew launches
their gigs and trains...novices?
What's so terrible about drifting from Valentino Pier to Dumbo on the flood?
Two guys screwed around, flipped their kayak, and clutched a buoy for a few
minutes. Had the cops not intervened, the worse that would have happened
would have been that they eventually let go of the buoy and drifted to the
nearest kayak.
Methinks the knee doth jerk.
And I'm bummed to hear a boatman use the word dangerous to describe the
beautiful tidal strait on which we live.
