Wow. They must've been too close. That's a large & sharp sort of bird to have flying at you. 

I had an osprey yelling at me one time, hadn't spotted it's nest & it was telling me I was too close. I figured it out pretty quickly & moved away before the bird thought it was necessary to give me anything but give me a verbal warning. It then proceeded to scare the living daylights out of a trespassing low-flying cormorant & I bet it would've given me the same treatment if I'd moved towards the nest instead of away.
