NYCkayaker Powerboat race on the Hudson, Saturday

Hi All-

Last Saturday I had some time to get out on the river. I figured I'd head over to the west side, putter along the shore and come back later.

As I was heading across, I saw 3 cigarette-type boats parked in the middle of the river. Then I saw 2 others going by on the west side REAL FAST! Then I looked downriver and there were about 50 more right behind them! It turned out that Saturday was the day of the NYC powerboat run up to Haverstraw Bay.

Since I had the 3 parked boats and a tugboat/barge to set a screen for me, I got a great view of these boats speeding upriver. Some they said topped out at over 100 mph.

I had them pass by on either side, it was a real thrill.

Of course, if I didn't have that screen I might have been in a little trouble!

I know these boats eat gas like crazy, make tons of noise and create a hazard on the river... but this was way cool to observe from up close. It seemed that all they had in contact with the water was the prop, and there was surprisingly little wake.

I had to wait about 15 minutes for all the boats to pass upriver, then I scooted back to Yonkers. They don't go as fast on their way back, but I stayed on the east shore to be safe.

Next year, if any of you know this event will be taking place, post something to the various lists. Better to be forewarned!

Enjoy-

jack
