I've also done this trip (once each way), and generally concur with Jeff on
time and direction.

When I went I had been paddling for about 4 years and had done a lot of long
20 mile type trips.  I would say that you definitely should go with someone
else, whether you are good at self-rescue or not, and you have to do a
proper float plan because the current can be significant.

And, if you happen to see a moving 'buoy', keep out of the way - submarines
surface in this area and that's probably what you are looking at.
