NYCkayaker "Waterfalls"

LIC Community Boathouse volunteer Ted Gruber asked a profound question: Why
are the police warning us that a kayak could get sucked into the waterfalls'
pumps while environmental agencies and the artist are assuring us that fish
can't be sucked in. I mean, as the 'yak goes, doesn't the bass?
Still, I will paddle down next week for a look, when evening currents are
favorable.
But in terms of revitalizing the waterfront, increasing awareness, and other
civic/natural goals professed by the artist and his supporters, imagine what
$15 million could have achieved in building boathouses, replanting marsh
grasses, and other access and habitat work. The payoff would have been
greater, over decades or more, as opposed to a media event of a few weeks.
