Hi All:

Steve Blumling and I have checked the currents and have concluded that Sat
Aug 2 is the choice date for our sixth annual Manhattan Circumnavigation.
The ebb current starts at Hell Gate in Astoria at 11:27AM. In addition,
August 2 displays a nearly full New Moon current strength bump-up.

.
We'll meet at 6:00 AM at Houston and West Street in Manhattan. This is Pier
40. Unload your gear and then park your car across the street. We launch at
7:00 AM SHARP. We will be paddling against the start of the flood until we
round the Battery.

We will take the east channel along Roosevelt Island on the East River.
We'll stop for lunch at Hallets Cove beach. Close to the beach is the Socrates
Sculpture Garden. A link to this Park/Museum is
_http://www.socratessculpturepark.org/_ (http://www.socratessculpturepark.org/) . Our visit on Aug 2 will
coincide with an outdoor exhibit on the creative re-use of materials. A short
tour led by one of the resident artists will be offered to interested paddlers

At 11:00 AM the current is calm or slack before the ebb at Hell Gate. So
we'll cross the East River at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island and paddle
toward the Harlem River on the west side of Mill Rock. We will paddle north on
the Harlem River since the Harlem River flows north when the Hudson and East
Rivers flow south.

We'll stop for a brief break at Swindler Cove Park at Dyckman St. on the
Harlem River around 1:30 PM. Use the bathrooms and walk around the Park. A link
to this park is _http://www.nyrp.org/parks/index.php?sub=0&p=2_
(http://www.nyrp.org/parks/index.php?sub=0&p=2)

After cruising through Spuyten Duyvil at the north end of Manhattan, we'll
stop at the Dyckman Street beach on the Hudson and check out Tubby Hook.

Starting around 3:15 PM we plan to speed down the Hudson on the ebb to 79th
Street. Then, going south, we'll paddle close together so as to avoid ferries
and cruise ships which are coming and going at that hour.

Plan on a return to Pier 40 around 6 PM

When their gear is packed back on their cars, some paddlers might want to
join friends and family at a Trattoria Spaghetto restaurant on 232 Bleeker
Street.
Somewhat secure parking is available inside the garage on Pier 40

This 30 mile trip is not a race. Paddlers will have time to socialize,
explore, take pictures and meditate. But the current dictates a certain schedule.
Get to a point too early or too late and you fight the current rather than
receive help from it.

Here is a link to the charts of hourly current flows around Manhattan
prepared by Bruce Taterka

Print the following current diagrams using the landscape setting on your
printer.
Then you can add the hourly times for August 2 to your current charts using
the data below
High and Low Tide at the Battery data for August 2
High Tide: 9:42AM and 9-54PM
Low tide: 3:43AM and 3:50PM

If you would like to join us, mark your calendar and let us know. And, if
you have any questions feel free to contact me back channel.
