This is wonderful progress. As some of you recall, I lobbied to have the lower East River, Hudson River, and Kill Van Kull added to the Hudson River Watertrail as befits waterways defined by the NYS DEC's definition of the Hudson River Estuary. Commissioner Lewandowski was far more ambitious and did an amazing job of rallying city resources and other allies to make this happen. 

Now we must amend City Parks permits to reflect responsible and enjoyable usage of the launches, with night and winter paddling allowed when dry suits and lights are used. Maybe even marine radios? 

And City Parks are only the beginning. Representatives from the state and national parks agencies attended, but we need commitments that they will be full partners in the NYC Water Trail. The NY State Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation has a shameful record of ignoring requests and passively cutting communication on this issue. But with a new administration comes new hope. Let's gently but relentlessly press for paddling and rowing in all state parks. At Gateway, let's push for more liberal permit policies and a boathouse at Floyd Bennet Field that's served by convenient and regular bus service.
