NYCkayaker Coast Guard and New York Port Security

I agree that this proposal is misguided. It would close off too much of the
harbor and make it less navigable and less safe for human-powered boats. The
channel between ellis and liberty islands is particularly useful when you
want or need to get out of the middle of everything. Imagine a big squall
out of the west, and some coast guard guy telling you you can't take shelter
along the jersey shore. The suicide kayaker scenario is just not a credible
threat--there are a million better ways to cause mayhem, if that is your
aim. It certainly doesn't justify closing off access to giant chunks of
public water. We all need to write letters about this individually, and
persuade whatever groups we belong to, and the elected officials that
represent us, to take a stand.
